Frequently Asked Questions

Why weld with a cobot?

Due to the development of collaborative robotics, robotic welding offers significant advantages to production companies large and small. Advancements in robotic welding allow production workers who have no previous robotics programming experience to learn how to operate a cobot within minutes. With robotic welding having been around for some time, the start-up costs of adding a robot to the operation have decreased.

Cobots work alongside humans and therefore don’t need to be kept in a cage that takes up a lot of factory floor space. With cobots (such as those from Universal Robots) weighing as little as 11 kg, many production companies choose to mount their robot arm on a magnetized surface or a wheeled trolley so they can deploy it anywhere in the factory.

By adding a cobot to the team, production companies benefit from reduced manufacturing costs and a shorter payback period and can make up for the shortfall in skilled welders.

At Smooth Robotics, we help you deliver your best work by putting you in control of the automated welding process in a way that enhances your business and benefits your employees.

How to become a Smooth Robotics partner?

We’re looking for international partners to sell SmoothTool to production companies so that welders all over the world can put welding robots to work without the need for complex programming. If you’d like to get involved in future projects as a potential partner, feel free to contact us.

How long does it take to learn how to use SmoothTool?

SmoothTool is an easy-to-use cobot welding package that helps your welding robot deliver the perfect result every time. Programming can take between 5 and 30 minutes depending on the complexity of your program and level of experience. Of course, the more you use SmoothTool, the faster you’ll get. Check out our video series Programming with SmoothTool to see how to get started.

What’s my ROI on SmoothTool?

SmoothTool’s intelligent no-code programming software means you can put your welding robot to work without the need for complex programming – even if you have no robotics experience. For the typical metalworking SME producing high-mix, low-volume series runs, this will slash changeover costs by up to 80% and increase order throughput. Based on this, it would take a maximum of 18 months to achieve ROI on SmoothTool. See an example of an ROI calculation in this article about cobot welding.

Does the torch mount fit on the flange?

The mounting surface on the botttom of the flange is exactly the same as on the robot arm. So mounting the torch on the flange is no different from mounting it directly on the robot.
